SPOKANE, Wash. – As we continue to look for ways to beat the heat, the City of Spokane has made more cooling resources available.
Comstock, A.M. Cannon and Hillyard Aquatic Centers are adding a free evening swim session on Saturday night.
Extended weekend hours are also available at some library locations. Liberty Park will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. this weekend. Indian Park Library and Central will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
“We are definitely seeing a lot of folks that just need a place to sit and rest and cool off,” said Shadle Library branch manager Jordan Hiker.
The extreme heat has also been beneficial for some businesses, like the Garland Theater. The theater offers a free movie Wednesdays through Fridays at 1 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on the weekends.
“We definitely have seen people here every week for the movies,” said Garland Theater owner Jasmine Barns. “They don’t care what it is, they just know it’s free, cold, and fun.”
The city said it saw a major uptick in the use of cooling centers during the last heatwave. It said about 300 people used the additional pool times, and some libraries saw an estimated 50% increase in traffic.
