AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — An Airway Heights police officer received a special award on Friday for rescuing a baby last year.
On Saturday, Airway Heights Police Department awarded AHPD Corporal Chris Langan with a Life Saving Medal.
In November 2024, Corporal Langan and other officers responded a domestic violence call near Sunset Park.
The caller told police his girlfriend was drunk and had left the house with two of their young children.
Shortly after officers arrived, the woman returned home with both kids who were not dressed properly for the near-freezing temperatures.
Corporal Langan soon learned the couple also had a newborn baby.
According to AHPD, neither the father or the mother knew where the baby was.
Corporal Langan began a search of the home.
“Taking it upon yourself, you conducted a thorough search of the house and vehicles. You located the baby inside the mother’s vehicle, which was not running. The baby, with only a small blanket, had his hands and feet exposed, and ice was forming on the vehicle’s hood,” said Police Chief Bradley Richmond at the awards ceremony.
Police rushed the baby to a warm patrol car and called EMTs for treatment.
The Life Saving Medal is awarded to officers who have saved a human life under unusual or extraordinary circumstances.
“Thank you, Corporal Langan, for protecting the most vulnerable among us,” wrote AHPD on Facebook.
