SPOKANE, Wash. — If you’ve walked through Riverfront Park recently, you might have noticed changes to some of the artwork.
Spokane Parks and Recreation Department fenced off a number of art pieces in the park after they were the targets of vandalism.
Both the Irish Harp and Stepwell statues are wrapped in fencing.
“Our team has been working with the artists to find the best solution and to create a coating that is as best of vandalism proof as it can be for easier cleaning and repair,” said Spokane Parks & Rec Communications Manager, Fianna Dickson.
The department said it has seen an increase in vandalism over the last few years.
In 2023, Crime Check received 136 reports of graffiti, and 169 in 2024, according to Spokane Police Department.
“If we see repeated vandalism on certain pieces like the harp, it may mean we have to work with the Sister Cities Association and the artist to maybe find an indoor location for that piece or find other solutions to make sure that this art remains accessible to the public, but also is as free from vandalism as possible,” Dickson said.
The Parks & Rec Department is working with SPD to figure out which parks might need more lighting or patrols to prevent vandalism.
If you see graffiti or property damage, you can call 3-1-1.
