SPOKANE, Wash. — Riverside State Park has taken another step toward recovery from the fires. Trails between Aubrey L. White Parkway and the Spokane River are now open.
The complex fires burned thousands of acres in the park and forced the closure of many areas due to damage. More than three months later, visitors can again use popular trails along the Spokane River.
For many local residents, the reopening is more than a return to a favorite route. Amy Kemp, a regular trail walker, brings her 10-year-old pup to the park, which offers fresh air and open space. Her dog has a cancer diagnosis, and Kemp’s visits to the trails have become especially meaningful.
“She is actually on her last legs so this is one of her bucket list items so we are very excited to be able to give it back to her.” Amy Kemp said.
Park rangers are asking visitors to respect the rules as the park continues to recover. Trails that remain closed are closed for a reason, and rangers urge people to stay out of those areas for their own safety.
