SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — An early morning fire temporarily closed the Valley Transfer Station on Thursday, according to the Spokane County Regional Solid Waste System officials.
Employees at the transfer station, located near the intersection of North Sullivan Road and East Kiernan Avenue, reported hearing multiple explosions before seeing a fire inside a compactor, according to county officials.
Fire crews responded and extinguished the initial fire, officials said. Crews are working to pull apart a pile of household garbage to locate the source of the fire and ensure it is fully extinguished.
No injuries have been reported, according to officials.
Fire investigators are on scene working to determine the cause of the fire.
Officials expect the Valley Transfer Station to reopen later Thursday.
Spokane County Regional Solid Waste System officials remind residents not to dispose of chemicals, batteries, fireworks, ammunition or other hazardous materials with regular household garbage.
Officials said household hazardous waste disposal stations are available on-site at transfer stations seven days a week.
