BOISE, Idaho – It’s a ceremonial vote, but the results were overwhelming: Idaho voters chose the Winchester Model 1873 as the state gun.
The so-called “Gun that Won the West” is a lever-action rifle, historically associated with frontier settlement in the United States.
31 percent of voters chose that, with the Winchester Model 1894 as the second choice.
The vote was an advisory vote, put on the ballot in part to increase voter turnout.
If lawmakers want to make it official, they’ll have to pass legislation.
The NRA says 10 other states already have state guns.
