SPOKANE, Wash. — Ferris High School continued a Halloween tradition this morning, as preschoolers trick-or-treated to each classroom.
The annual activity is part of the school’s early childhood education class, where 30 high schoolers work with 24 preschoolers. The preschool program runs two hours a day, four days a week.
This Halloween tradition has gone on for about two decades.
As the young trick-or-treaters moved from room to room, the high school students guided them through the visits and helped them practice asking for treats.
“Kids are so fun and so special, and I feel really blessed that I have an opportunity to take a break from hard classes and just enjoy the presence of little kids,” said Maeli Dean, a senior in the early childhood education class.
The program also gives high school students practical experience. Ferris High School senior Destiny Seaman said the work has helped prepare her for a career in education.
“I think my biggest takeaway is learning how to work under pressure and in a situation where you have to switch your teaching style to meet the kid’s needs in the moment, and it has to be pretty on your feet with those,” Seaman said.
The high schoolers say they left with their hearts full, and the preschoolers went home with full buckets.
