SPOKANE, Wash – Construction crews have reached a significant milestone in construction of the long-awaited freeway that connects north and south Spokane.
The Washington Department of Transportation says contractors set the final bridge girders last week for the North Spokane Corridor.
That means every section of the freeway from US 395 to Sprague is either complete or under construction. The remaining piece is the connection to I-90, scheduled to break ground in 2027.
WSDOT says construction is nearly complete on the Spokane River crossing.
The idea for a freeway connecting north and south Spokane was originally conceived in the 1940s.
The entire project, which began construction in 2001, is scheduled to be completed in 2030.
