SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane County Interstate Fair will provide a more accessible experience for visitors during Caravel Autism Health Sensory Day on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Providence Health will provide free carousel rides in the main carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fair organizers said it will be the first time the fair has offered free rides to all visitors.
Sensory-friendly carnival hours include:
Kiddie carnival rides without lights or sound from noon to 5 p.m.Main carnival rides without lights or sound from 3 to 5 p.m.
Several organizations will provide resources and activities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the North Lawn and in other areas of the fairgrounds.
Free activities include:
Craft making and sensory dough playPaper mask, dance ribbon and glitter jar projectsAn instrument petting zooAccessible movement and dance activitiesPhotos with Pancake the Sensory PigMeet-and-greets with fairytale princesses
The Arc of Spokane will operate a Quiet Zone in the Plaza Courtyard near the Longhorn indoor dining area. Visitors can use the space to take a break and spend time with a therapy dog.
The Spokane Symphony will give free performances at noon and 2 p.m. near the North Stage. Spokane Indians mascots Otto and Doris will appear in the same area from noon to 1 p.m.
Bay 4 will feature the Five Senses Flower Truck from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The interactive exhibit is a partnership among “Follow the Blooms” host Katie Lila, Your Friends Farm and the fair. It will give visitors an opportunity to experience locally grown flowers through multiple senses.
The fair opens at 11 a.m., with sensory-friendly attractions and activities scheduled throughout the day as part of the Spokane County Interstate Fair’s 75th anniversary celebration. The fair runs Sept. 11-20.
