COLFAX, Wash. — A Spokane carjacking suspect was arrested near Colfax Friday evening.
According to thee Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified about the carjacking at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday when the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Johnathan Payne from Moscow, fled Spokane County.
Payne was seen by multiple people driving erratically on State Route 195 through Whitman County. Witnesses saw him speeding, making unsafe passes and forcing other cars off the road.
The Sheriff’s Office says Payne struck another vehicle near Trestle Creed Road and continued driving south before losing control and crashing into a ditch near Pape Machinery.
Deputies arrived moments later and Payne advanced on the deputy.
Payne was taken into custody with the help of bystanders nearby. The deputy got a cut to the forehead during the arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office says Payne also bit an EMT on the wrist while being assessed.
Payne was arrested on multiple felony offenses in both Spokane and Whitman Counties. He was transported to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
