BOISE, Idaho — Five men who responded to a deadly ambush of firefighters on Canfield Mountain in 2025 were among nine first responders honored Tuesday with the Idaho Medal of Honor.
Governor Brad Little and Attorney General Raul Labrador presented the medals to Kootenai County deputies, a Northern Lakes Fire captain and engineer Dave Tysdal, who was shot during the attack.
“We can never fully repay those who risk everything to protect us. But today we can say that we see your sacrifice, we honor your bravery, and we are profoundly grateful for your service to the people of Idaho,” Governor Little said during the ceremony.
The ambush claimed the lives of Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison. Attorney General Labrador held a moment of silence for both men during the ceremony.
Tysdal was among three firefighters shot during the ambush. The gunfire instantly paralyzed him. Despite the severity of his injuries, Tysdal used his radio to warn other responders of the ambush and request help.
“His unwavering presence of mind, and selflessness contributed to preventing further injuries and enabling a coordinated and effective response. Engineer Tysdal showed great determination and bravery. Putting his own safety aside to care for the safety of others,” Attorney General Labrador said.
Kootenai County Sheriff Office Deputies Harvey Ballman, Arek Brock and Joshua Wesley Orr, along with Fire Captain Ernst Fritz Wiedenhoff of the Northern Lake Fire Protection District, were among the first law enforcement to arrive at the scene. All four were recognized for their bravery during the response.
