SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Hundreds of runners and spectators gathered Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of The Course Spokane Valley, a new 46-acre cross country venue that stretches along the Spokane River.
The facility marks a significant addition to the region’s sports infrastructure, offering dedicated space for distance running events. The Course features winding paths and grassy routes specifically designed to accommodate track and field competitions ranging from collegiate and regional to national levels.
The opening day celebration included a youth 3K race followed by men’s and women’s 5K competitions, with awards presented to winners in each event. Spectators lined the course throughout the day, cheering on participants as they navigated the scenic route along the river.
Marit Jacobs, director of partnerships and impact at Spokane Sports, highlighted the community aspect of the new venue. “It’s a place for our community to come together and support one another,” Jacobs said. “The most fun part about being out there was someone cheering for you, which was really, really cool.”
The energy at the opening event reflected the community’s enthusiasm for the new facility. Runners expressed their appreciation for the venue’s design and the welcoming atmosphere created by fellow participants and supporters.
The Course is positioned to become a hub for distance running in the Pacific Northwest. The venue’s location along the Spokane River provides a scenic backdrop for athletes while the dedicated infrastructure supports events of varying scales and competitive levels.
Looking ahead, The Course will host the Nike Bob Firman Invitational on September 25th, one of the region’s premier cross country competitions. The event is expected to draw elite runners from across the country and further establish the venue as a destination for serious distance runners.
The opening of The Course addresses a regional need for a dedicated cross country facility. Previously, events in the area relied on various locations, but this purpose-built venue consolidates resources and creates a professional environment for both athletes and spectators.
