MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. — The City of Medical Lake is prohibiting all fireworks discharge beginning Friday as dangerously dry conditions and strong winds create extreme fire danger heading into the Independence Day weekend.
The ban takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 3, and remains in place through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, July 4. Fire Chief Cody Rohrbach made the decision after reviewing current and forecasted fire weather conditions.
Updated forecasts indicate a return to warmer, drier, and windier weather with sustained winds approaching 20 mph, combined with dry vegetation across the region. A countywide recreational burn ban is already in effect, and recent wildfire activity in Spokane County has heightened concerns about rapid fire spread.
“We did not make this decision lightly,” Rohrbach said. “We recognize the importance of Independence Day and understand that fireworks are a meaningful part of that celebration for many people. Our responsibility is to protect life, property, and public safety, and we believe this limited restriction is necessary during the highest-risk period.”
The prohibition applies to all consumer fireworks within city limits. Professional fireworks displays scheduled outside the Friday-Saturday window are expected to proceed if they comply with all permit conditions and safety requirements. These displays operate under strict permit requirements with licensed pyrotechnic operators launching from designated sites over bodies of water during late evening hours when conditions are safer.
