POST FALLS, Idaho – In a ceremony with family and close supporters, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation welcomed Coeur d’Alene Fire Engineer David Tysdal and his family back into their newly renovated home following extensive accessibility modifications.
“These renovations have transformed my daily life.” Tysdal said, “I can shower…I can cook again. There are no longer make-shift ramps outside my home. Tunnel to Towers has restored my confidence in being able to do more things on my own.”
Engineer David Tysdal served the City of Coeur d’Alene for more than two decades, joining the fire department in 2002.
On June 29, 2025, a gunman set a brush fire and ambushed responding firefighters. Engineer Tysdal was critically injured when he was shot during the attack. Two other firefighters, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison, lost their lives.
Tysdal retired in January after 24 years of service. A month later, he received the Idaho State Medal of Honor for his actions during the ambush, when he used his chin to activate his radio, broadcast a description of the shooter, and warn fellow first responders.
Wanting to remain on his family’s Christmas tree farm, the existing home was renovated into a smart home thanks to the Foundation and the generosity of the local community, including donated materials, volunteer labor, and countless individuals who stepped in to help carry the load during an incredibly difficult time.
“David Tysdal risked everything to protect his community,” said Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. “Tunnel to Towers is proud to stand with the people of Coeur d’Alene in making sure he and his family have a home that meets their needs today and into the future.”
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller gave his life while responding to the World Trade Center. For 25 years, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has honored Stephen Siller’s legacy by supporting America’s military members and first responders who risk their lives in the line of duty.
To date, Tunnel to Towers has delivered more than 1,700 mortgage-free homes to heroes nationwide and has committed over $1 billion across its programs.
