COEUR D’ALENE — An indoor baseball facility called the “Canfield of Dreams” moved one step closer to reality after Coeur d’Alene City Council agreed on a location for the project earlier this week.
The new field house will be built at the Canfield Sports Complex in the current parking lot area. Coeur d’Alene Little League is spearheading the project to provide year-round training opportunities for local youth baseball players.
David Everson architect of the facility and board member of Coeur d’Alene Little League said the facility addresses a growing need in the community.
“The idea really came out of demand, a need to get our Little Leaguers some more reps in the colder months,” Everson said. “And then also in the springtime when we’re playing, we get so many practices and days that are rained out.”
The indoor facility will feature batting cages, a fielding area and pitcher’s mounds. Everson believes the amenities will significantly improve the experience for young players.
“To have an indoor facility where we have batting cages, a fielding area, pitchers, mounds would be just such a major difference for our kids,” he said. “And just give them such a better little league experience all around.”
The facility will serve a substantial number of teams. Coeur d’Alene Little League has grown significantly in recent years, now supporting players from age 4 through 16.
“So, we even have some four-year-olds that are starting in T-ball, and it goes all the way up to 16 years old,” Everson said. “Our juniors division is middle school and then high school kids. But we have over 44 teams in our league this year.”
Because the project is a partnership with the city, the entire community will have access to the facility. The plans also include public restrooms that will serve the entire park.
“The porta potties are our only source of a restroom out here,” Everson said. “And so, our idea would be to make a fully public restroom enclosed for the entire park.”
Coeur d’Alene Little League estimates the facility will cost between $400,000 and $500,000 to build. The organization has already started a capital campaign and received donations for the project.
The group hopes to complete construction within the next several years.
