OLYMPIA, Wash. — Washington Attorney General Nick Brown announced a lawsuit challenging President Trump’s executive order that limits mail-in voting.
According to AG Brown, Washington is part of a coalition of 23 attorneys general and one governor in the lawsuit.
President Trump signed an executive order this week creating a national list of eligible voters and ordering the Postal Service to send ballots only to those listed. States and election officials are threatened with loss of funding and criminal prosecution if they do not comply.
The President has long claimed U.S. elections and mail-in voting are rife with fraud without evidence.
AG Brown says the Constitution gives states the ability to control how they conduct elections. It’s alleged the executive order violates the separation of powers and interferes with state voting systems.
“The President wants to control your vote. He wants to tell the Postal Service what ballots they can accept and when. But this is patently unconstitutional,” Brown said. “Mail-in voting is safe and legal in Washington. We will do everything we can to defend it. And come November, despite the president’s lawless threats, we’ll once again use that power to protect our democracy.”
