SPOKANE, Wash. — About 100 protesters gathered at B.A. Clark Park in North Spokane Saturday afternoon for a “No War on Iran” demonstration.
Despite the snowy conditions, community members showed up to voice their opposition to the conflict.
“I’m here because I love this community that cares about their country and want to make lying wrong again,” said protester Dianne Stradling Denenny.
For some protesters, the demonstration felt necessary.
“It feels like the right thing to do,” said Bonnie Rae.
Protest organizer Scott Ward spoke on US war spending while Americans struggle with basic needs.
“None of this is the interest of working-class people who don’t have health care that’s affordable, who don’t have affordable housing, who don’t have affordable education. Meanwhile, we’ve spent 20 billion on this war already,” Ward said.
The protest featured guest speakers from some of the organizing groups and community members. This included three veterans and some Iranian Americans who shared their personal experiences.
“If we all come together, put aside any political differences, we could actually build a much better world for ourselves and for the people around the world.” Ward said.
Organizers announced a “No Kings” protest for March 28th at Clark Park, where they expect thousands of community members to attend.
