WALLACE, Idaho – After less than four months on the job, the embattled sheriff of Shoshone County, Idaho is stepping down.
William Eddy posted his resignation letter on his Facebook page Friday.
“This decision comes after careful consideration and upon the advice of my doctor, who has expressed serious concern about the high level of stress associated with this position and its impact on my health,” Sheriff Eddy wrote in his letter to county commissioners.
“Serving Shoshone County in this capacity has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life. I am grateful for the support I have received from county leadership and the citizens of this community,” he said.”
Commissioners appointed Eddy in November to replace Sheriff Holly Lindsey who resigned.
In the months since, the police chiefs of several towns in the county have expressed their unhappiness with Eddy’s appointment, even issuing a letter or no confidence.
Several members of the sheriff’s administrative staff have also stepped down since he was appointed.
Eddy was also called upon to lead the department during a shooting at the sheriff’s office in December.
The Shoshone County Democrats now have 15 days to submit list of candidates to the commissioners. The Shoshone County Democrats submit the replacement because Eddy belonged to the party.
Commissioners then have 15 days to select a new sheriff.
