BOISE, Idaho – Shoppers using SNAP benefits in Idaho can no longer use them to buy candy and soda.
The change went into effect February 15th.
It prohibits the use of SNAP funds for candy, soda and other sugar-sweetened soft drinks.
Idaho lawmakers passed the rule last year, saying it’s designed to improve health, especially in families and children.
The state had to receive a waiver from the USDA to make the changes.
Idaho is one of 18 states to make these changes, backed by support from the Trump administration.
Critics of the changes include the National Grocers Association, which says it will cost time and money to implement the changes, especially at small, independent stores.
