SPOKANE, Wash. — Lilac City Voices is kicking off Valentine’s Day weekend on a high note – and it’s part of a longstanding tradition.
The barbershop singing group is performing Valentine’s Day songs for people’s loved ones. Group member and social media director Jesse Anderson said it’s part of the group’s mission of encouraging joy in the community.
“We’re here to spread cheer and love through our song,” Anderson said. “We enjoy singing and delivering that fun to everyone at home.”
The nonprofit group has been performing in the area for over 50 years, and Anderson estimates it’s been singing Valentine’s Day songs for over 30.
For a price starting at $69, people can have the singers surprise their loved one at a specific time and location, perform two classic love songs and deliver flowers. This is the first year the group has partnered with Peters and Sons Flowers, and prices vary depending on which flower arrangement people select.
Anderson said the group loves seeing people’s reactions to the singers.
Among those receiving a surprise visit from the group this year was Elizabeth O’Doherty.
O’Doherty is a manager at Empire Dance Shop, and her husband surprised her with the singers while she was at work. She said the singers were quite a shock, but a good one.
“That was a wonderful surprise,” O’Doherty said. “They have these lovely, lovely voices, and I was just kind of overcome with emotions.”
The group will perform today and tomorrow. They said they are still taking bookings.
