SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Members of the local Seahawkers club will be heading to the west side, but they do a lot more than just cheer on the Hawks. They also give back to the community.
The Spokane Valley Seahawkers are one of many booster clubs the Seahawks have across the world. The club had about 120 members last year and they get together at The Rock Bar to watch each Seahawks game.
But its president said the booster club is about a lot more than just watching football and supporting the team.
“We raise money within our group, and we give to local charities,” said Lawrence Bingham, president of the Spokane Valley Seahawkers. “Some of the charities are Truth Ministries, Transitions, Sally’s House.”
The Seahawkers in Spokane Valley combined to donate over 800 volunteer hours to local organizations. The club donated over $13,000 to several different charities around the area including the Salvation Army’s Sally’s House, which works with local foster kids.
The president said they focus on donating to charities that keep the money in the Spokane community. The club hopes the Seahawks Super Bowl win will inspire more members to join so they can have an even bigger impact next year.
“I think winning the Super Bowl is going to be a huge opportunity for that because it’s really got people excited,” Bingham said. “Our game watch was so much fun.”
Sally’s House provides emergency foster care for children in Eastern Washington. “Generally, it’s emergency placements where we receive children that are experiencing either abuse or neglect, and are brought to us for a period of time until a permanent foster care placement or at least a semi-permanent foster care placement or adoption can take place,” said Nellwyn Barnett of the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army says its foster care programs run at a deficit and it relies on donations from the community to keep the program running. It’s one of only a few organizations in the state offering this kind of service, and they’re happy to be supported by the Seahawkers.
