SPOKANE, Wash. — Winter is here, and Spokane County Fire District 4 is sharing some space heater safety tips to keep yourself and your family safe.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment caused an estimated 56,000 home fires across the country between 2009 and 2013.
Fire District 4 says while space heaters are common in homes, they can be dangerous if not used safely.
In order to stay safe, follow these basic precautions:
Plug a space heater directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip.Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from a space heater.Turn off heaters when leaving the room or going to sleep.Check cords and plugs for damage before using them.Use heaters with tip-over and overheat protection whenever possible.
