DEER PARK, Wash. — Deer Park Ambulance needs $7,000 to repair one of its ambulances and is asking the community for help.
The nonprofit ambulance service covers north Spokane County and south Stevens County. It relies on volunteers and donations to provide emergency medical care and receives no tax dollars.
Deer Park Ambulance is one of only a few nonprofit ambulance services in the region. The service has provided emergency medical care for decades and operates six ambulances across more than 600 square miles.
“We want to stay here. Nationwide, ambulance services are closing their doors. Nationwide ambulance services are increasing their billing rates and we’re not doing that,” said Amber Jones, director of operations for Deer Park Ambulance.
When one ambulance breaks down, it impacts the service’s ability to respond to emergencies. The service responds to thousands of calls each year and provides standby services for community events.
“Ensuring that we have the capability to not only do 911 calls, but we do standbys for different groups that need ambulance services, and having those rigs available so that we can do that is imperative,” Jones said.
A local auto shop is donating time to diagnose and fix some issues with the ambulance. The service still needs public help to cover repair costs.
“We needed a lot of different things and when we have six different ambulances to keep in service, things break down and its difficult to get parts sometimes for them. It’s not like you can just go to Napa and get that part,” Jones said.
Jones said every dollar donated goes directly toward maintaining the ambulances. Other ambulances also need routine maintenance, which becomes difficult to fund when major repairs are needed.
