SPOKANE, Wash. — About 100 people gathered in Spokane Saturday afternoon to voice opposition to the United States’ military operation overthrowing Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro.
Peaceful rallies took place at Clark Park and Kendall Yards near the Maple Street Bridge.
Demonstrators held signs protesting U.S. intervention in the South American nation.
Ari Dean, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Immigration, said the group wanted to show that Spokane residents reject U.S. actions in Venezuela.
“We just want to demonstrate that the people of Spokane can reject this,” Dean said. “We want to show people that there is a movement that they can join if they care about this. And people who don’t know, we want them to learn that what is happening and how it impacts us.”
Dean’s organization plans to attend the next Spokane City Council meeting to request that the city pass a resolution opposing a war with Venezuela. The group hopes to formalize the city’s stance against military intervention in the region.
