PULLMAN, Wash – The Pullman School District janitor arrested on child rape charges is now on leave and forbidden from accessing school property.
Pullman Police arrested Eric Robins earlier this week. A child told investigators Robins sexually assaulted them over a period of several years.
Police say Robins’ contact with the victim was not related to his employment. He worked as a night janitor at Jefferson and Sunnyside Elementary Schools.
Pullman Schools sent a note to families this week, saying it put Robins on leave immediately upon learning of the allegations and he is not permitted on district property or any school/district events while the investigation continues.
“We recognize that news like this can be unsettling,” Superintendent Bob Maxwell said in a statement that went out to families and staff. “If your child has questions or concerns, our school counselors and administrative team are available to provide support.”
Pullman Police said Robins has a criminal history that includes arrests for aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a firearm. Police did not say if Robins was convicted of those charges in the affidavit of probable cause, only that he has a history of those arrests.
The district said Robins completed all background checks and screenings prior to his employment and, at that time, “there was nothing that would have prevented [him] from working in our schools.”
Robins appeared before a judge Wednesday in Whitman County. The judge set his bond at $200,000.
As of Friday morning, he was still in jail.
