SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Deputies and officers from across Spokane County spent Sunday morning connecting with children and families who need food and gifts for Christmas.
This Holidays and Heroes event took place at the Spokane Valley Walmart. It gave kids the chance to shop for Christmas and even meet Santa.
Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels says this is a tradition that’s been going on for more than two decades.
“They walk out of here with a grocery cart full of toys, full of presents and they also go home with food. Enough for a nice Christmas dinner with their family to make sure that the holiday season is a time that they actually get to enjoy,” Nowels said.
This event was made possible with the support of Spokane County’s first responder community and donations from several community businesses.
“Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces, they get so excited they can hardly tell you their names they’re so happy,” said volunteer Barbara Veit.
After the presents are wrapped, Sheriff Nowels says they get delivered to the kids’ homes in a patrol car.
