COLBERT, Wash. — Winning a state championship comes with trophies, banners and, apparently, a coach willing to sacrifice his earlobes.
Northwest Christian girls volleyball coach Dave Whitehead made his team a promise: if they won the 2B state championship, he would let one of the players pierce his ears.
The Crusaders had never earned a state title — until this year.
And on Monday night, during the team’s banquet, Whitehead made good on his pledge.
Junior Lauren Matthews pierced her coach’s ears as teammates watched and cheered.
Video from the event shows Whitehead sitting calmly as Matthews completed the piercing.
The team says they used titanium clear-gem studs.
