SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Volunteers at Neighbors Feeding Neighbors serve more than Thanksgiving meals. They serve hope to a community facing rising hunger.
Fifth-grader Michael Abdallah spends his Sundays volunteering instead of playing video games or reading comic books.
“It makes me feel good when I can help people and when other people feel good,” Michael said. “I don’t know. It just brings me happiness. It just makes me feel good.”
Michael and other volunteers serve Thanksgiving meals with smoked turkey, vegetables and gravy. They help families who arrive by car.
Robert came for a meal. He sees the need in his community.
“Everybody deserves to eat. It doesn’t matter who you are. Everybody deserves to eat,” Robert said. “There’s so much hunger going on right now. You know, I mean, things aren’t great.”
The need has grown this year. Neighbors Feeding Neighbors usually serves over 200 people. Recently, they served over 400 meals in one drive.
Volunteer Roy Rojo finds meaning in helping others.
“It gives me the opportunity to share my blessings with everybody,” Rojo said. “I cry thinking about how throughout the whole United States have been stepping up and distributing food.”
For Robert, the meal service shows community support.
“It’s a wonderful thing knowing that the community comes together and helps each other. I don’t know how to explain it, but the love is out there, and it’s all coming together,” Robert said.
