Colleen Hoover is getting real about how all the Blake and Justin drama has changed the way she feels about It Ends With Us. The book came out back in 2016, blew up on TikTok, and even got a sequel, and honestly I loved both. So it’s wild seeing Hoover now say she’s embarrassed to admit she wrote it.
The movie was supposed to be this big moment. Blake played Lily and Justin starred and directed. Then everything fell apart. Months after the film dropped in August 2024, Blake sued Justin for sexual harassment and retaliation. He denies it, and the whole thing is headed for trial in 2026. The damage is already done.
In a new Elle interview, Hoover said the drama has completely overshadowed the story. She even joked that when people ask what she writes, she just says, “I’m a writer, please don’t ask me what I wrote.”
Honestly, I get it. As a fan I’m annoyed that all this mess basically ruined the movies. The books deserved better, and at this point it really feels like we will never get a sequel.
Hoover also said the negativity has been hard on her mom, whose real life experiences inspired the book. Even talking about it now brings back stress. “I feel awful,” she said. “It’s sad because I was so proud of that book. Maybe I need therapy.”
Luckily Hoover still has other projects moving forward including Verity with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, Regretting You, and Reminders of Him. But It Ends With Us definitely did not deserve this ending.
