OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Health received additional federal funding to continue the state’s Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program through mid-to-late November, according to state officials.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture provided the funding, allowing Washington to maintain food benefits and support its reduced 11-member administrative team. Officials warn funding could run out sooner if redemption rates increase.
The WIC program serves pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to age 5 who meet income guidelines with vouchers for nutritious foods.
The Department of Health continues monitoring the situation and provides updates through its Federal Government Shutdown webpage. The funding extension provides temporary relief for thousands of Washington families who depend on the program.
