KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. — Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency in Kittitas County after an oversized load severely damaged the Bullfrog Road overpass on I-90 near Cle Elum, forcing westbound traffic closures.
The crash occurred October 21, 2025, when a truck carrying an over-height load struck the overpass from below. The impact caused immediate safety concerns and significantly reduced the bridge’s lifespan.
Officials stated that the driver was not impaired. However, they violated their permit by failing to go around the overpass. The driver was cited at the scene, but no criminal charges were filed.
Emergency contractors will demolish the damaged overpass beginning Oct. 23, according to the Snoqualmie Pass social media account.
One lane of eastbound I-90 will be closed during demolition from 6 p.m. Oct. 23 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25. Westbound I-90 is expected to reopen early next week, with traffic currently detoured at Exit 80.
Repair costs could exceed $8 million.
The emergency declaration enables WSDOT to access Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief funds and supports expedited contracting processes.
