SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane County will mail nearly 400,000 ballots for the November election starting October 15. The ballots could arrive in mailboxes as early as next Thursday.
The county elections office has prepared the ballots and checked each one to ensure it goes to the right address with the correct races for each voter.
Some ballots have already been sent to military and out-of-state voters.
“People register to vote or move or change their addresses. Then we want to make sure that they get the correct ballot. So we will be preparing and mailing ballots every day now through the election basically,” said Mike McLaughlin, Spokane County Elections Manager.
Voters still have time to register or change their address online. The deadline is the Monday before election day. After that, changes must be made in person during the final eight days.
“That Monday before election day is the last day you can do that online. After that, in the last eight days, you have to do that in person. So you can go to VoteWA.gov and register to vote or update your address, or you can give us a call,” McLaughlin said.
Election officials recommend mailing ballots three to four days before election day. The postal service picks up mail only once per day, so ballots mailed on election day likely won’t be postmarked in time to count.
Voters who can’t mail early can use drop boxes instead.
“All of our drop boxes will be open next Wednesday, so you can use those. They’re at all of the public libraries, town halls and CenterPlace Event Center in Spokane Valley,” McLaughlin said.
Voters can also drop off ballots directly at the elections office.
