SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A man was arrested for a hit and run crash following a welfare check in Spokane Valley.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the welfare check near the intersection of Progress Road and 16th Avenue around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday.
Callers reported an SUV stopped in the road with the driver slumped over the steering wheel. SCSO said shortly after, the SUV was involved in a crash near Progress Road and 19th Avenue where the driver slammed into a parked truck before driving away.
Deputies contacted the owner of the parked truck, who said it was a work vehicle.
A third caller reported that the SUV was stopped in the middle of the road at Pines and 32nd Avenue. The caller said the front of the SUV was damaged and the driver was slumped over the steering wheel.
While a deputy was on the way to the intersection, he saw a similar SUV driving north. The driver, 33-year-old Jeffrey S. Schelin, stopped in the left turn lane and appeared to be waiting for the patrol car to leave before making the turn.
The deputy matched the license plate of Shelin’s car to the previous reports and pulled him over. Schelin slumped forward in his seat and did not respond to commands. Deputies prevented him from driving away by moving patrol vehicles in front and behind his SUV.
Shelin was arrested for driving while impaired and hit and run. He was booked into Spokane County Jail.
