SPOKANE, Wash. – A fire destroyed the main concession stand at Avista Stadium early Friday morning, leaving charred walls and debris at the home of the Spokane Indians baseball team.
The fire started around 2:30 a.m. Fire crews stayed on scene well into the afternoon. The cause remains unknown.
The concession stand shows extensive damage. The siding is charred and parts of the roof and walls crumbled to the ground. Fire investigators must wait until the building is safe to enter before they can determine what caused the fire.
Kyle Day, the Spokane Indians’ general manager, described his reaction to seeing the flames.
“A lot of disbelief, a lot of surreal feelings,” Day said. “Yeah, it’s still a little hard to believe.”
Fire crews worked for hours to protect the rest of the ballpark. Travis Patterson from the Spokane Valley Fire Department said safety concerns changed their approach.
“Once the hazard of a roof collapse was identified, for the safety of the firefighters, they pull out and go to defensive operation,” Patterson said.
Day said the situation could have been worse. No one was hurt and the fire stayed in one building. The team’s home schedule also ended Sunday.
“When things like this happen you try and look for some silver linings,” Day said.
The team will work with Spokane County to plan next steps.
“We’ll regroup and come up with a path forward,” said Day.
The organization hopes to rebuild before April when the next season starts. Day said the team has received strong community support since the fire.
