SPOKANE, Wash. — People gathered in downtown Spokane on Saturday to celebrate African American culture at the first Soulfood and Sips event.
The street festival celebrated with food vendors, art, performances and music.
The event was put together by the EEG organization. Some of the proceeds from the event are going towards building an African American museum in Spokane.
“We like a place where we can call home,” said Julie Serquinia, the organizer of Soulfood and Sips. “A place where you gather together community and solidarity, just like we are today, and see each other on a regular basis. A museum will allow that to happen.”
This festival was inspired by Tacos y Tequila, which had to cancel its event this year due to safety concerns.
In honor of that, organizers say some of the sales from Saturday’s festival will be going toward the nonprofit that hosts Tacos y Tequila.
