PULLMAN, Wash. – There aren’t many surprises on Washington State’s first depth chart of the season. We now have “official” (official is in quotes for a reason) confirmation that returning QB Zevi Eckhaus will likely be the man under center for the Cougars.
I say “official” because the depth chart is formatted in a unique way. Some WSU football fanatics might remember Mike Leach-era depth charts, where he listed players as “or” instead of the starter, back up, third string and so on. Coach Jimmy Rogers’ first depth chart for the Cougs is just like that.
We usually see “or” between two players that share the same position and skill level or the starting role hasn’t been definitively decided. In the case of the first depth chart of the season, there’s an “or” at every position.
But if we look at the way the depth chart stacks players in their position and assume the first name is the starter, that’s where we get the best idea of who we’ll see on gameday.
The offense is highlighted by receivers Josh Meredith and Jeremiah Noga along with former South Dakota State running back Angel Johnson.
Redshirt freshman Anthony Palano will start at middle linebacker which Coach Rogers confirmed after practice last week; MIKE is one of the youngest rooms WSU has. The position group is listed to have two redshirt-freshman and one true freshman.
Former SDSU star safety Tucker Large (who linebacker Keith Brown described as one of the most athletic guys he’s ever seen) will put the Coug logo on for the first time after four seasons in South Dakota. Large was named to the 2024 FCS All-America team.
Here’s a look at this week’s depth chart against Idaho:
WSU and Idaho kickoff at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 30.
