COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Joel Patrick Rose, 62, was sentenced Friday to 30 days in jail, a lifetime hunting ban, and $35,000 in fines and restitution for illegally killing a trophy elk.
According to Idaho Fish and Game, Rose shot the elk with a 6.5mm rifle during archery-only season in September 2024, then tried to stage it as an archery kill by creating a fake arrow wound after the animal’s death.
Evidence was discovered when Rose brought the elk to a taxidermist. Forensic analysis revealed bullet wounds and a postmortem arrow wound, said Idaho Fish and Game.
Rose was found guilty following a June 2025 jury trial.
