SPOKANE, Wash – A man arrested for murder and assault in downtown Spokane Thursday night has a history of assault and had a warrant out for his arrest.
Police say 20-year-old Colin L. Pedro attacked a man he’d been dating around 6:30 Thursday night, then stabbed a total stranger who was at the scene.
After the stabbing, Pedro walked to the Post Street Bridge and sat on a railing, threatening suicide.
The bystander later died at the hospital, the other suffered serious injuries.
Police locked down the area and blocked streets, finally bringing Pedro off the bridge and into custody around 10:15.
He was booked into the Spokane County Jail on murder and assault charges, along with a community custody hold.
First man attacked was dating the suspect
According to court documents, Pedro was dating a man he met at Truth Ministries a couple months ago, and the two have been living in a tent in various areas of Spokane.
Thursday morning, the man said he and Pedro got into a fight over an ID and EBT card. The man said Pedro got upset and held a knife to his throat. The two argued, then the man said things got back to normal.
The two went about their day, playing Fortnite at the library and visiting a downtown cannabis shop. They were walking downtown when the man says Pedro started the argument about the EBT card again and things escalated.
The man said they were near the Post Street Bridge when Pedro punched him several times and knocked him to the ground.
The victim said he was in a haze and remembers being near the running statues in Riverfront Park. He said there were strangers around and he was trying to warn them that Pedro had a big knife.
He said he was still dazed but heard people saying Pedro stabbed someone multiple times.
Police obtained video from City Hall of the assault. They say it shows Pedro and the other man squaring off as if to fight then Pedro charges the other man and stabs him once in the upper body.
Police say the victim fell to the ground and put his hands up, then Pedro stabbed him 10 more times in the upper body. That man died at the hospital.
When questioned by police, Pedro allegedly admitted to both the assault on his boyfriend and the stabbing, telling police he stabbed “the absolute sh*t out of him as deep as I can.”
Police say Pedro told them he was angry at his boyfriend and angry at the man for intervening.
History of assault
Washington Department of Corrections had been actively looking for Pedro because he failed to appear in court in Clark County earlier this week.
Pedro was convicted in 2023 of assault, harassment and carrying a weapon with intent to intimidate.
In 2024, he was again convicted of assault and was out of prison and under community supervision.
