SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A man was arrested for stealing clothes and a bike and running from deputies in Spokane Valley Monday night.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies tried to stop 27-year-old Joshua A. Helliwell on East Broadway Avenue west of North Burns Road for a traffic violation.
Helliwell, who was riding a bike, looked at the patrol car and continued riding on North Burns Road.
The deputy tried to stop Helliwell, but Helliwell sped up to try and escape.
SCSO says Helliwell then started riding the other way, cross Broadway Avenue and road into the driveway of a home on North Burns.
Helliwell then got off the bike and ran into the backyard. The deputy ran after Helliwell and yelled at him to stop.
Helliwell jumped over a fence into another backyard where the deputy was able to take him into custody.
SCSO said Helliwell had an active Washington State Department of Corrections Community Custody warrant for his arrest.
Helliwell said he didn’t stop for the deputy at first because he had just stolen some clothes and knew he had warrants. He also admitted to stealing the bicycle he was riding at the time.
Helliwell was booked into Spokane County Jail for his warrant, theft and obstructing law enforcement.
