SPOKANE, wash. — As temperatures continue to rise into the 90s, you and your family can beat the heat at a number of different places around Spokane.
Public pools, libraries and splash pads are some of Spokane’s primary cooling locations for families and individuals without air conditioning at home.
The city operates 19 splash pads across its park system and six public pools.
“The public pools are wonderful. I used to enjoy them when I was a young man and now my young grandson enjoys them very much,” said Copper Stephens, a Spokane resident.
Libraries are also a great option to cool off as they offer air-conditioned spaces for extended stays during peak heat hours.
When temperatures reach 95 degrees for two consecutive days, the city activates formal cooling centers that add 89 extra beds to the existing homeless shelter system. These centers operate during evening hours when other cooling locations close.
Spokane Transit Authority supports the heat relief effort by offering free rides to cooling centers on days when temperatures are forecast to reach 95 degrees or higher.
