SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – Spokane County and the City of Spokane have committed over $1 million to keep Maddie’s Place open after state funding uncertainty threatened the facility’s closure.
The county increased its contract from $594,000 to $750,000, while the city approved $300,000 from opioid settlement funds, according to a county news release.
“Maddie’s Place is a beacon of hope for families in our community struggling with substance use,” said Mary Kuney, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners.
The facility addresses a regional crisis. While Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome rates decline nationally, Washington state’s rates remain nearly twice the national average. Spokane County’s rates are more than three times higher, according to county officials.
Maddie’s Place is the only facility in Washington that houses parents and their substance-exposed infants together during treatment. Since opening in 2022, 95% of the 122 infants served have remained in their parents’ care, officials said.
“This funding commitment demonstrates a shared commitment to addressing the opioid crisis with compassion and a focus on keeping families together,” said Justin Johnson, Spokane County Director of Community Services.
