KELLOGG, Idaho – Two hunters who gave a man a ride in North Idaho last fall thought his story was suspicious and ultimately turned him in for illegally killing a bull moose.
Idaho Fish and Game says Raymond A. Black of Kellogg did not have a moose tag, but shot and killed a trophy-class moose that was standing on a U.S. Forest Service road near Wolf Lodge Saddle.
Fish and Game officers say Black tried to load the carcass into his vehicle, but got stuck in the snow and was picked up by two hunters.
Those hunters that picked him up thought his story was suspicious, so they wrote down his license plate and reported it through the Citizens Against Poaching hotline.
When Black eventually got back to his vehicle, he left the area, leaving the entire moose to waste in the snow.
Because of the tip, Idaho Fish and Game conservation officers served a search warrant on Black’s home and seized the rifle along with other evidence.
Black pleaded guilty to a felony charge.
He was sentenced to six months in jail, three years of supervision and more than $10,000 in fines and fees.
He also loses hunting and trapping privileges in Idaho for life.
Because of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, the lifetime revocation is in effect in all other U.S. states except Hawaii.
