SPOKANE, Wash – The City of Spokane is poised to pay nearly $4,000,000 to the estate of a man shot by police in 2022.
A lawsuit was filed in federal court by the estate of Robert Bradley, saying Bradley was ambushed at his home in Hillyard and that officers didn’t clearly identify themselves and give Bradley time to respond.
Police had previously argued that Bradley pointed a gun at them when they were at his home to confiscate his weapons and that’s why they opened fire.
The trial was pending in federal court and was scheduled to go to trial in November, but an advanced city council agenda for next week lists a settlement for the council to approve.
The federal court docket indicates that hearings in the case are on pause until the court gets word that the matter has been officially resolved.
The city would pay just over $221,000 while the city’s insurance company would pay $3,655,000 in exchange for the case to be dropped.
The council has to approve the settlement and will consider it at the meeting on July 28.
The City of Spokane previously approved a $500,000 settlement with Bradley’s fiance, but the Spokesman-Review reports Bradley’s children did not agree to the settlement, which is why the legal case continues.
