SPOKANE, Wash. — A local organization that cares for babies born addicted to drugs and their parents secured over $1 million in funding over the last two days.
On Tuesday, the Spokane County Commissioners voted to increase funding for Maddie’s Place, a recovery nursery for babies experiencing withdrawals from drug exposure in the womb.
The vote increases the annual funding contract from $594,000 to $750,000, effective July 1.
“Spokane County’s support of Maddie’s Place since October 2023 has been critical to keeping our doors open,” said Shaun Cross, President and CEO of Maddie’s Place.
On Monday, the Spokane City Council also approved a special ordinance to grant Maddie’s Place $300,000 from the City’s Opioid Abatement Funds.
“This $300,000 will serve as a bridge funding for us as we wait for the State’s funding to kick in, hopefully, later this summer. The City’s support at this time is helping us to keep our doors open as we provide this vital service to the community,” Cross said.
Maddie’s Place avoided a potential closure this past spring after the Washington State Legislature initially cut its funding by nearly $1.8 million, but restored it in the final budget.
“Together, these actions reflect a strong regional commitment to addressing the ongoing opioid crisis and supporting vulnerable families,” said Maddie’s Place in a press release.
