SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A man was arrested for breaking into several cars and one occupied home near North Evergreen Road in Spokane Valley Monday afternoon.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, calls came in around 1 p.m. saying 43-year-old Brett W. Schillinger got into the driver’s side of a woman’s car while she was filling up gas.
Witnesses said Schillinger had entered several different vehicles in the area and was possibly armed with a handgun.
Deputies were able to find Schillinger in the yard of a home on East Broadway Avenue. Schillinger yelled, “Help me” as deputies approached.
SCSO said deputies told Schillinger to get on the ground, but he did not listen and continued to move toward the deputies. A deputy pulled out his Taser, told him again to get on the ground and warned Schillinger that if he did not listen to instructions that force would be used.
Schillinger listened and was safely taken into custody.
SCSO said Schillinger admitted to opening a victim’s car door, grabbing her arm and trying to pull her from her car. While this was happening, Schillinger yelled, “Give me your car now! I need your car!” He also said someone was trying to kill him.
Another victim said he was at his home when he heard a man’s voice. The victim then saw Schillinger inside his home without permission.
Schillinger said he tried to steal vehicles because he believed people were trying to kill him. When asked how many cars he tried to enter, Schillinger estimated it to be five.
Schillinger also admitted to entering the home without permission.
Schillinger was booked into Spokane County Jail for attempted robbery and residential burglary.
