SPOKANE, Wash. — Mayor Lisa Brown is joining mayors nationwide in urging federal lawmakers to preserve a grant program that provides millions annually for affordable housing and social services in Spokane.
Brown joined the U.S. Conference of Mayors in calling on House members to protect the Community Development Block Grant program.
Spokane received nearly $3 million in CDBG funding in 2024 for affordable housing, food banks, domestic violence services, workforce training and home repair programs.
“Eliminating the Community Block Development Grant would have devastating consequences for Spokane and vulnerable communities across our region,” Brown said. “These funds go directly to affordable housing programs, infrastructure improvements, and public services for seniors, low-income families, and people with disabilities.”
Luke Tolley, interim chair of the Bemiss Neighborhood Council, said CDBG funding has been essential for Northeast Spokane facilities including the Northeast Community Center, Northeast Youth Center and Hillyard Senior Center.
Brown is urging Rep. Michael Baumgartner and other House members to reject proposals to eliminate the program.
