HAYDEN, Idaho — Health officials have issued a public advisory for portions of Hayden Lake after water testing revealed harmful algal blooms.
The Panhandle Health District and state agencies announced the advisory for the upper end of Hayden Lake near Sportsman’s Park after recent sampling confirmed cyanobacteria presence.
Officials warn the blooms can spread with wind and water traffic throughout the lake.
Safety Warnings
According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, residents using lake water for drinking face serious risks since cyanobacteria cannot be removed by boiling or filtering. Anyone who contacts contaminated water should wash off immediately with fresh water.
Those eating fish from the lake should remove all fat, skin and organs before cooking.
Health Risks
According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, exposure symptoms include rashes, hives, diarrhea, vomiting, coughing and wheezing. Severe symptoms affecting the liver and nervous system may result from ingesting contaminated water.
Pets, children, elderly individuals and people with compromised immune systems face the highest risk.
Cyanobacteria bloom when temperatures rise, appearing as discolored water, scum streaks or thick green mats along shorelines. Officials urge caution when water appears discolored or murky.
Current advisories are available on state health department websites.
