SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A woman was arrested for driving an SUV on the Centennial Trail while under the influence.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, 61-year-old Maureen G. Mortlock was driving west on the trail near East Trent Avenue at around 9:10 p.m. on Saturday.
Deputies deployed spike strips ahead of the SUV and yelled at Mortlock to stop while using flashlights to show where they were.
Mortlock ignored the deputies and drove over the spikes. She continued to drive on the trail with deflated tires. Deputies chased her on foot while yelling at her to stop.
SCSO said there were several pedestrians, including children, on or near the trail at this time.
Mortlock eventually stopped and was told to put her SUV in park. SCSO said Mortlock was fumbling around and seemed to have problems putting the car into park.
When Mortlock got out of her car, she appeared unsteady and smelled of alcohol.
Mortlock was detained and showed more signs that she was under the influence while speaking with deputies. She told deputies she was new to the area and trying to find her way home. Mortlock denied drinking any alcohol that night.
SCSO said Mortlock agreed to do a field sobriety test. After the test, Mortlock was arrested for DUI.
A breath test showed Mortlock’s blood alcohol level at 0.150 and 0.147. The legal BAC limit is 0.08.
Mortlock was booked into the Spokane County Jail for DUI and reckless driving.
