SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — The National Weather Service declared a Red Flag Warning for parts of the Inland Northwest on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Spokane Valley Fire Department has some tips to help protect our communities from wildfires.
Red Flag Warnings are issued when there is a significant increase of fire danger due to severe weather conditions. NWS says breezy and gusty conditions expected on Tuesday and Wednesday will create elevated to critical weather conditions.
The Red Flag Warning affects the Spokane area, Palouse, Snake River and the Columbia Basin. The warning is in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The Spokane Valley Fire Department says during Red Flag Warnings, it’s even more important to practice fire safe behaviors.
Here are some things you can do to be fire safe in your community:
Do not throw cigarettes or matches out of car windows.Do not extinguish cigarettes on the ground.Make sure all chains on your vehicle are secured and not hitting the ground.Do not drive or park in dry grass or vegetation.Do not target shoot during extreme weather.Avoid yard work or welding near dry vegetation.Follow all local burn restrictions.
