SPOKANE, Wash. — President Trump signed his tax cut and spending bill into law this afternoon on the Fourth of July.
“There could be no better birthday present for America than the phenomenal victory we achieved just hours ago when Congress passed the one Big Beautiful Bill to make America great again,” Trump said.
The House passed the Big Beautiful Bill Thursday night in a 218-214 vote.
The bill includes tax cuts for wealthy Americans and funding cuts that affect programs for poor Americans. It puts pressure on Medicaid and SNAP recipients.
The Congressional Budget Office says the bill will cut Medicaid funding by $1 trillion. This could push more than 11 million Americans off their health insurance over 10 years.
More than 1.8 million Washingtonians use Medicaid, called Apple Care locally. The program serves seniors, children, and people with disabilities.
Thirty percent of Eastern Washington residents use Medicaid, including 54% of children 19 and under.
Rep. Michael Baumgartner supports the bill’s tax cuts and defense funding.
“Thank you, Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong support of the Big Beautiful Bill,” Baumgartner said.
“The Big Beautiful Bill puts much-needed funding in missile defense through the Golden Dome system. And I encourage every American who cares about making our country wealthier and safer to support the Big Beautiful Bill,” he said.
The Congressional Budget Office says this bill will add $3.4 trillion to the national debt over 10 years.
The bill extends tax cuts from Trump’s first presidency and cuts taxes on tips and overtime pay.
The bill also changes work requirements for SNAP benefits. Adults must work until age 64 instead of 54. Parents with children older than 6 must also work.
